Live Scan vs. Ink Fingerprinting: Which Do You Need?

You've been told you need fingerprints for your new job or license—but then you're faced with terms like "Live Scan," "ink fingerprints," and "FD-258 cards." What's the difference, and which one do you actually need?

While both achieve the same goal—identity verification through biometric data—they are two completely different processes used for different jurisdictions. Choosing the wrong one will lead to immediate rejection and weeks of delay.

What is Live Scan Fingerprinting?

Live Scan is the standard for California state background checks. It is a completely digital process where your fingers are scanned on a glass plate, and the images are securely transmitted electronically to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI.

  • Speed: Results typically returned in 1-7 days.
  • Accuracy: The software checks for clarity in real-time.
  • Jurisdiction: Used for CA licenses, employment, and permits.

What is Ink Fingerprinting (FD-258 Cards)?

Ink fingerprinting is the traditional method where ink is applied to your fingers and rolled onto a physical paper card (usually the FBI FD-258 card). This card is then physically mailed to the requesting agency.

  • Speed: Slower. Mailing + processing can take 2-8 weeks.
  • Jurisdiction: Used for Federal jobs, Out-of-State licenses, and International requirements (visas, adoption).

Which Method Do I Need?

The Golden Rule: Read your instructions carefully.

  • If your form says "Request for Live Scan Service" or "BCIA 8016", you need Live Scan.
  • If your instructions mention "FD-258", "Blue Card", or "Hard Card", you need Ink Fingerprinting.
